Lanzarote is the most distinctive of the Canary Islands. Unlike Tenerife or Gran Canaria, it didn’t build its tourism around resorts and shopping centres — the island is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, shaped by a volcanic eruption in the 18th century that left a landscape unlike anywhere else in Europe. Timanfaya National Park looks like another planet. The Jameos del Agua caves are an architectural masterpiece carved into a lava tube. Papagayo beach is as good as anything in the Mediterranean. A week here feels longer than a week almost anywhere else because the island is genuinely varied.
